Surf Art Featuring Artist: Scott Denholm

Featuring Artist:  Scott Denholm

Scott Denholm is an award winning contemporary ocean artist living on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Scott began painting traditional landscape scenes in 1993, age 10 and received two years of tutoring from local artists. As a junior, Scott’s award winning landscapes showed a maturity in his style and technique years beyond his age.

After moving to the Sunshine Coast in 1996 he took up surfing and immediately developed an infatuation and respect for the ocean.

Later joining the famous Australia Zoo crew for 7 years, his interest and dedication to the environment led him on the path in 2011 to becoming the world’s first and only eco conscious surf artist.

Surf Art Featuring Artist: Mark Seaman

Featuring Artist:  Mark Seaman

Mark Seaman is an American Master Wood Carver noted for “carving” his name through the art world.

Living in San Diego for over 30 years, his sea inspired carvings can be found up and down the California coast in restaurants, bars, private homes, and schools. His western inspired horses, buffalo, and Native American Chiefs showcases his many talents in storytelling and attention to detail making each carving truly special.

Mark attended San Diego State University, where he learned to perfect his craft and make it his career. Staying true to the California lifestyle, he would surf every morning, noticing the beauty of the sea, it’s creatures, and the local lagoon life. Using sturdy materials such as Honduran Mahogany, Black Walnut, Teak, and White Oak, each carving contains the beauty of the wood allowing the perfect backdrop to each image.

Recently Mark finished a carving of La Jolla Shores for Duke’s Restaurant in La Jolla, California. A 10’x5′ view of the famous La Jolla coast line carved out of high density foam, providing a fresh feel to a surf inspired restaurant. Other projects in the works includes landscapes of beaches, light houses, and Multnomah falls in Oregon.

Using just a chisel, hammer, and a block of wood, Mark is truly a Master Wood Carver.

Surf Art Featuring Artist: Bino Smith

Featuring Artist:  Bino Smith

A self-taught multi medium artist from Aotearoa, New Zealand.

I am of Maori/Croatian decent and was brought up on my marae in Hongoeka Bay, Porirua, Wellington. My tribal connections are Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Raukawa, Te Ati Awa, Ngāti Kahungunu. And Tainui, Tokomaru and Takitimu being my canoes.

Many of my inspirations come from my strong Māori heritage, and the values our culture upholds, and the Māori way of seeing the world (holistically). As with all indigenous cultures, Māori still retain a close connection to Papatuanuku (Mother Earth) and our many gods.

Surf Art Featuring Artist: XALIKI ART

Featuring Artist:  Cathy Cogill

A deep connection with the sea was forged at an early age and continues to this day.

Cathy has been body surfing the waves off Mooloolaba for over 50 years now and her large wave paintings reflect the awe and admiration she has for the ocean.

Her formal art tuition commenced in 1998 in the Brisbane studio of mosaicist Scott Harrower. An interest in the technical aspects of mosaic making coincided with her research on the mosaics of the Greek island of Delos, the topic of her Bachelor of Arts honours thesis at the University of Queensland.

Scott introduced her to the “Ravenna technique” of making mosaics where the classical motifs of ancient Greece and Rome were replicated using small hand-cut marble tesserae.

Following many trips to Greece, Italy and Cyprus in pursuit of the ancient mosaics, in 2005 Cathy settled in Hania, Crete where she set up a mosaic studio and successfully exhibited and sold her work.

The second phase of Cathy’s art tuition commenced in 2010, when she studied painting (acrylic on canvas) in the studio of Eva Von Bernstorff in Hania.

Since then she has undertaken several drawing and painting courses on the Sunshine Coast with Lyn Donald and Don Milner, and in Brisbane with Robert Andrews, Abramo Papp and Merv Moriarty.

Surf Art Featuring Artist: Celeste Dawson

Featuring Artist:  Celeste Dawson

Celeste’s artist’s practice consists of paintings with a very distinct and occurring theme of organic forms, lines, shapes, colours, and natural themes based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Celeste is a Christian artist, and in her painting she reveals through the lens of her faith the glory and beauty of God, His creation (or nature), and the spiritual power this holds. The ocean, the experience of the ocean, and nature in general are an instinctual and intuitive basis of the works she produces.

Celeste is known amongst the coast for her large-scale black and white murals, which she has learned over the last year is her most preferred medium to work in. Celeste is also exploring hosting and curating local exhibitions, particularly seeking to represent emerging artists from the area.

Having lived in the Sunshine Coast her whole life, the surrounding environment has undoubtedly been a major influence on her identity as an artist, as well as her faith. These two contributing factors reveal the formula for her art making.
