Surf Art Featuring Artist: XALIKI ART

Featuring Artist:  Cathy Cogill

A deep connection with the sea was forged at an early age and continues to this day.

Cathy has been body surfing the waves off Mooloolaba for over 50 years now and her large wave paintings reflect the awe and admiration she has for the ocean.

Her formal art tuition commenced in 1998 in the Brisbane studio of mosaicist Scott Harrower. An interest in the technical aspects of mosaic making coincided with her research on the mosaics of the Greek island of Delos, the topic of her Bachelor of Arts honours thesis at the University of Queensland.

Scott introduced her to the “Ravenna technique” of making mosaics where the classical motifs of ancient Greece and Rome were replicated using small hand-cut marble tesserae.

Following many trips to Greece, Italy and Cyprus in pursuit of the ancient mosaics, in 2005 Cathy settled in Hania, Crete where she set up a mosaic studio and successfully exhibited and sold her work.

The second phase of Cathy’s art tuition commenced in 2010, when she studied painting (acrylic on canvas) in the studio of Eva Von Bernstorff in Hania.

Since then she has undertaken several drawing and painting courses on the Sunshine Coast with Lyn Donald and Don Milner, and in Brisbane with Robert Andrews, Abramo Papp and Merv Moriarty.

Surf Art Featuring Artist: Mark Seaman

Featuring Artist:  Mark Seaman

Mark Seaman is an American Master Wood Carver noted for “carving” his name through the art world.

Living in San Diego for over 30 years, his sea inspired carvings can be found up and down the California coast in restaurants, bars, private homes, and schools. His western inspired horses, buffalo, and Native American Chiefs showcases his many talents in storytelling and attention to detail making each carving truly special.

Mark attended San Diego State University, where he learned to perfect his craft and make it his career. Staying true to the California lifestyle, he would surf every morning, noticing the beauty of the sea, it’s creatures, and the local lagoon life. Using sturdy materials such as Honduran Mahogany, Black Walnut, Teak, and White Oak, each carving contains the beauty of the wood allowing the perfect backdrop to each image.

Recently Mark finished a carving of La Jolla Shores for Duke’s Restaurant in La Jolla, California. A 10’x5′ view of the famous La Jolla coast line carved out of high density foam, providing a fresh feel to a surf inspired restaurant. Other projects in the works includes landscapes of beaches, light houses, and Multnomah falls in Oregon.

Using just a chisel, hammer, and a block of wood, Mark is truly a Master Wood Carver.

The Awakening

by Chris Postle

Mother Earth and our beautiful oceans are under a huge threat at the moment from humanity and our massively increasing population and demand for more food. After recently watching some disturbing documentaries Chris decided to try and do his little bit to help create some awareness of just what this planet can offer.

Also a deep yearning to protect for our future generations.

The painting comes from the heart as the ocean is my playground also and I feel right at home painting one of my favourite subjects.

The mermaid was initially inspired by one of my four beautiful daughters whom has a love for drawing and painting fantasy. How fitting to have a beautiful mermaid in total harmony with the ocean life, a symbol of our existence half human half fish, maybe a statement about being a little more in tune with the underwater environment, the keeper of our existence.

I hope in some small way that my painting can impact a little on people’s minds to pull back a bit and take notice of what we are doing to the oceans. I love my seafood also but there are plenty of more sustainable ways to keep the balance.

Chris will be unveiling his masterpiece at Tinbeerwah Community Hall on the 19th & 20th Jan along with a diverse range of Chris’ latest contemporary art pieces.

All welcome opening 9am till late both days.

2019 World Longboard Championship

IT’S OFFICIAL! It’s taken a while and we’ve had to be a bit cagey about it, but today we are absolutely stoked to officially announce that the World Surf League will be joining the Noosa Festival of Surfing 2019. The WSL Noosa Longboard Open will be the first stop on the 2019 World Longboard Championship for both men and women, taking place in the second half of next year’s festival. With our own festival activities and divisions taking place from 2-6 March, the WSL will then take over First Point between 7-10 March in a spectacular finale to the 28th annual Noosa Festival of Surfing.
Huge thanks to World Surf League, Tourism Noosa Team, Tourism & Events Queensland, Noosa Malibu Club and World Surfaris for making this happen!

Highway Mural - Sunshine Coast

Okay here we go again. …

l am happy to say l am repainting the Sunny coast’s favorite Wave mural this weekend coming … Thanks to the airport management we have now cctv camera’s, night lighting and a anti graffiti clear over the top + financial support .. looking  forward to returning the Mural to it’s glory for us all to enjoy again even at night.

THE destruction by graffiti artists of an iconic Sunshine Coast mural set in former cane land off the Sunshine Motorway north of Pacific Paradise has sparked widespread anger overnight.

The painting of Old Woman Island with offshore swept waves has been seen by thousands of motorists every day since artist Owen Cavanagh first painted in 2001.

Community anger has erupted after an iconic artwork lining the Sunshine Coast Motorway was vandalised. The mural had survived, untouched for more than a decade.#7News
